Eastern S-type quarter stater

The coin featured here was unearthed by Bill Byford and was identified as an Ancient British gold quarter stater. Bill isn’t looking to sell the coin but he asked me to let him have some idea of its possible value.

On the obverse is a letter S and nothing else. On the reverse is a tree-like trophy set upon three ring and dots, which are joined together. Other decorative elements are in the field. All this adds up to this coin being an example of an Eastern S-type quarter stater.

In Ancient British Coins Bill’s find is listed as number 2249 and is said to be extremely rare.  The type is not included in the Standard Catalogue.

Valuation

The coin is well struck on both sides, it would grade at least good VF and it scores high on eye appeal. If it was sold at auction then I would expect the pre-sale estimate to be set no lower than £800-900.
