Penny of John, class 5a2
Colin Pearson sent me the images of this resent find and said I could include it on this website.
Colin’s find is an English voided short cross penny. Coins of this type can sometimes be difficult to pin down if they are worn or badly struck. This example, though, is in really good condition so the ID was relatively simple.
On the obverse the S in hENRICVS is reversed and at the start of the legend on the reverse is s cross pommee. Therefore, this penny is an example of John class 5a2. The legend on the reverse reads hENRI ON LVND so Henri is the moneyer and the mint is London.
Valuation
The coin is well struck and would grade VF+. Class 5a2 is quite rare so my price range on this John penny would be £250-280.
