Halfpenny of David II of Scotland

Mike Bull believed this hammered silver coin was a rare first coinage halfpenny of David II of Scotland. I was asked if I shared his opinion on this find.

This is exactly what Mike thought it was. A number of different varieties are on record for David II halfpennies. On the obverse of this coin is a legend reading +MONETA:REGIS:D:. Om the reverse there is a mullet of five points in two angles and the legend on this side reads +AV IDS COT TOR. In Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands halfpennies of this type ae listed as number 5080.

Halfpennies of David II are not as rare as thy used to be as a number of specimens of various type and varieties have been unearthed by detectorists in England. However, at this moment in time they are still very rare.

Valuation

Mike’s coin would grade Fine but it is weak in places and there is some loss from the edge at the top of the obverse.  In its present state of preservation my pre-sale auction estimate would be £200-250.
