Shilling of Philip and Mary
Steve Smith said he had always had a coin of Philip and Mary on his wish list and this example popped up on the 2nd of September. Groats of P & M are not particularly scarce but this is a shilling, which is very rare as a detecting find.
The legend on the obverse includes the full titles and above the heads of the monarchs it is dated 15 54. On the reverse there is the mark of value (X II) over the shield.
Valuation
It’s always nice to be able to cross something off a bucket list and nicer still when it is a rarity. This shilling has a few minor scuffs but is round and flat. The centre of the obverse is a little weak but overall the coin would grade good Fine to about VF. If I was cataloguing it for sale at auction then I would set the pre-sale estimate at £700-800.
