Henry VIII groat
Graham Smith said he is new to detecting so he wanted to know what I could tell him about the hammered silver coin pictured here.
The coin is a Henry VIII groat, of which there are many mints and varieties. This example was struck at London during the third coinage (1544-47). On the obverse the legend starts with hENRIC 8 and the bust of King Henry is number 1 or 2.
On the reverse the legend stars with POSVI and there is an annulet with a pellet centre in each fork of the long cross. The mint mark on both sides is a fleur de lis.
Valuation
The coin would grade Fine but has some unattractive colouration on both sides. However, to a keen collector is should still be worth around £80.
