Halfpenny of Edward III

This hammered silver coin was unearthed last weekend by Anthony Hopkinson, who asked if I could let him have a full ID.

The coin measures 15mm in diameter so it is a halfpenny.  On the obverse the legend reads +EDWARDVS REX and on the reverse we have CIVI TAS LOn DOn. This halfpenny has features that enable me to say it is a class XVIb coin of Edward III. It was struck at London during the third coinage, which commenced in 1344 and ended in 1351.

Valuation

In the Standard Catalogue the type is listed as number 1557.  I’d grade this example as good Fine and my price range would be £35-40.
