Silver unit of the Dobunni

After a lean spell Roger Paul said he had managed to unearth a couple decent finds. The first one, identified by Roger as an Ancient British silver unit, is featured here.

This is a silver unit of the Dobunni and was found well away from nearest border of this tribe. On the obverse is a head facing right with crescents for hair. On the reverse is a triple-tailed hose facing left with a wheel above, a pellet behind and a flower below. A number of varieties of Dobunni silver units are listed in Ancient British Coins but they do not include the full set of characteristics featured on this coin.

Valuation

Roger’s find is in better than Fine condition but the edge is chipped and the surfaces unattractive. It might not be the best looking coin in the world but it’s still a nice find, which should be worth at least £75 to a keen collector of Ancient British coins.
