Medieval gilded silver seal matrix
A finely crafted seal matrix, dated to 1250-1400, with the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child held in her arms. The inscription reads TE: ROGO: IVSTICIE: SOL: PIVS: ESTO: VIE / AVE MA which has been translated as ‘I beseech Thee, holy Sun of Righteousness, be the way’. An unusual feature is the socket for a separate handle.
