Henry VI Half Groat

Henry VI halfgroat

This coins is a recent find and was unearthed by Oliver Jackson

It’s a Henry VI halfgroat, which was struck at Calais during the annulet coinage. The photographs were enlargements of the coin, which can sometimes be confusing if the same design and legends were used on groats. However, on groats the inner legend on the reverse reads VIIL LA CALI SIE but on halfgroats the mint signature is CAL IS’. The coin would grade VF in terms of wear but there are faint scratches on the obverse, which is also double struck and this will reduce its possible commercial value.

Valuation

In its present state of preservation I’d give it a price range of £60-80.

Richard II Halfpenny

Richard II halfpenny

This coin is a recent find and was unearthed by Oliver Jackson

The coin is an intermediate type, London halfpenny of Richard II. This is one of those coins that used to be very scarce until detectorists started to dig them up here, there and everywhere. Almost all English hammered halfpennies and farthings were scarce and this included cut coins. However, whilst some are still scarce or rare, most examples of small change have dropped in price because of an increased supply to the market through detecting finds. Cut coins in particular, especially those of the voided short and long cross coinages, can now be bought for prices lower than they were 50 years since.

Valuation

Though not as scarce as it used to be, Oliver’s Richard II halfpenny would grade good Fine and should still be worth around £45 to a collector.

Edward IV Penny – Irish

Irish Penny of Edward IV

The finder of this coin said it turned up somewhere in Leicestershire. The coin was struck at Dublin and in Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands it is listed as number 6397. Pennies of this type used to be quite rare but over recent years several examples have been found in England.

Irish pennies weighed less than their English counterparts so there were exported to England in high numbers. Many purposely copied the design of English pennies in order to make them more acceptable in England. So many were exported that the end result was a shortage of coins in Ireland. Around one in four of the pennies of Edward IV that are unearthed in England are Irish.

As is always the case, this Irish penny is short of flan but it is exceptionally fine for the suns and roses type; indeed, it is by far the best specimen I have seen as a detecting find.

Valuation

If offered for sale at auction then I would expect the pre-sale estimate to be £500-600.

On 27 October, was day 2 of Hanson’s auction of Coins, Banknotes and Antiquities.

King Offa Penny

Anglo-Saxon penny of King Offa

The delightful Anglo-Saxon penny featured here is a coin of King Offa of Mercia, of which there are numerous types and varieties. This one has on the obverse M +OFFA REX in three lines divided by beaded bars. On the reverse is the moneyer’s name VVI ИOD (Winoth) in two lines separated by a bone-like device. The reference number in the Standard Catalogue is 908.

The standard numismatic reference work (published 2010) on the reign of Offa is The Coinage of Offa and his Contemporaries by Derek Chick (edited by Mark Blackburn and Rory Naismith) The coin shown here is listed by Chick as type 214 and in the year 2010 twelve specimens were on record.

Go back 40 years and all the various types of pennies of Offa were very or extremely rare. Over the intervening period many more examples have been found and a steady stream of them has come onto the market. Those that are defective in some way can be difficult to sell, as most collectors focus now on the state of preservation rather than on rarity. Today a reasonably decent specimen can be bought for a few hundred pounds.

However, the one pictured here isn’t just ‘decent’, it is one of the finest extant specimens of Chick type 214. The flan looks to be slightly uneven but the coin is otherwise in good VF to near EF condition.

Valuation

A pre-sale auction estimate shouldn’t be any less than £3,000-£4000.
