Recent finds sold well at auction in the last couple of weeks; a gold sword pommel sells for £18,000, George Grenville’s ring for £9,500 and Nobby makes £3,000. I suspect many detectorists will have thought about what they would do with the proceeds of that big find but probably wise to listen to the words of Tom Clark, finder of George Grenville’s ring, who said after the auction “I am sure that my wife will have ideas of how to spend it“.

In PAS Finds we have the story of how a Edward VI shilling came to be stamped with a portcullis. Plus, there’s a unique Crondall Thrysma. In Readers’ Finds we have a penny of Offa.

In the 18th Century, a Prime Minister introduced some new taxes to try to reduce Britain’s debt. It was very unpopular and he was sacked shortly after. George Grenville’s ring was found last year and is up for auction.

In PAS finds we have a Nationally Important new variant of a Henry I penny. Another coin that might by unique has been sent in by one of our readers, Phil Clark – a very curious penny of Edward I-II. Plus six more readers’ finds.

It’s been a few weeks since we’ve been able to produce a full Friday Update. We always try to publish the articles on any finds that have been sent in on the Friday of the week they are sent in even if we can’t do a full update. So, please do keep sending them in. We’ve a catch up this week with 21 Readers Finds including a very rare Penny of King Coenwulf of Mercia.

Plus in PAS Finds, there are two significant finds since our last issue: a Viking weight with a very rare Viking oval ring embedded in it and a penny of William of Aumale; only the third known example.

Plus in the news, the story of how detectorist Chris Weir found a gold ring after his wife encouraged him to keep detecting.

A penny of Guthrum, found in February this year and considered to be of “considerable numismatic importance” is up for auction with Noonans with an estimate of £10,000 – £15,000. Auctions are uncertain things and the much publicised find of the “largest gold nugget” failed to get anywhere near its pre-sale estimate when the auction closed on Monday.

Money isn’t everything though and 16 year-old detectorist Ellis Hargreaves is said to be over the moon with our Find of the Week, a gold stater.

In PAS Finds is a figurine of Harpocrates, the Roman god of secrecy and silence. His story provides the name behind an everyday decorative fitting and could he be the inspiration behind the stage name chosen by Harpo Marx. Also, a token from the Kings Arms in Chatham – are they still pulling pints there?

Detectorist Roy Davis was going through his finds from nearly 40 years ago when he decided to give one a bit of a clean. That revealed a Royal crest and the inscription “King Charles”. That silver vervel of Charles I fetched £7,000 at auction this week. Continuing the Charles I theme, a silver medallion of him and his wife was declared Treasure this week. The local council paid tribute to how detectorists and museums work together to the benefit of their communities.

Alan Rumsby’s story is a familiar one; out detecting on a field that he had detected many times before with little success, he finds gold. The “historically important” ring is up for auction at Noonans later this month. More gold in Readers Finds; a quarter noble of Edward III and another gold stater.

In PAS Finds we have a look at a trade token from a village in Kent. Why did it have two pubs with the same name?

Editorial

The big news this week is Noonans auction of the Braintree Hoard of Anglo Saxon coins for a staggering £325,560. We have details of the find and a look at the die variations of the numerous mints represented in the hoard.

Some really good finds from readers this week, including an Ecgberht penny, half noble of Richard II and a gold stater. At the other end of the spectrum we have a curious forgery of a George III shilling. We appreciate them all – thanks for sending them in.

In PAS finds, we love to track down a person. This week it’s a Memento Mori ring with the inscription “Penelope Clevland”. Plus, reader Kev Woodward has kindly provided some new information on a couple of our previous PAS articles. How do these affect our identification in these cases.

“A Thousand Years of English Coins” by Peter Spencer

On Wednesday 6 March, Peter will be giving a talk entitled ‘A Thousand Years of English Coins’.

It will be given to the Forum 2000 Group in Horsforth which is on the outskirts of Leeds. The venue is the Grove Methodist Hall, 5, New Street, Horsforth, Leeds LS18 4BH. My talk will start at 10.00am, last approximately 40 minutes and will be followed by tea and biscuits. There will then be plenty of time for questions.

It is not restricted to members of the Forum 2000 Group but the admission charge is £3, which includes refreshments. Information on the Forum 2000 Group can be found here. Anyone wanting further details should contact me.

Detectorists will know that you can have runs of good luck and then it can turn. Similarly with finds sent into this website, we can have several of one type of find and then not see one for a while. When we first started in 2020, we seemed to get a gold stater sent in nearly every week. That led my wife and Peter’s daughter, Victoria, to say “Not another bloody gold stater“. Not a phrase that’s ever been uttered by any detectorist I dare say. For the second edition running, our Find of the Week is a gold stater. We’ve identification and valuation of 12 more of your finds.

One find that I would be surprised if we see again in the coming weeks is Jonathan Needham’s “one in a billion” find – a gold Bronze Age cloak fastener. It is the first find of its type in Britain for 30 years.

Recent detecting finds did well in Noonans auction last week, particularly a rare groat of Edward V.

Two articles on PAS finds. On is a copper tally; an example of a mundane find with a lot of social history attached to it. The other is actually a mudlarking find; it’s such an interesting piece that I thought it merited a trip over to the dark side.

After a couple of weeks away for Christmas and a holiday, it’s good to be back.

Once the detecting bug gets you, it can stay with you for a long time. Our Find of the Week is a gold stater, found some 40 years since and described by the finder, Rob Warwick, as the most beautiful thing he has ever found. And Hansons have an auction this week dedicated to the collection of a late detectorist that was amassed over 40 years. The auctioneer says “His passions in life were nature, wildlife and metal detecting. Apparently, he loved anything ancient.

Hansons have some much more recent finds in their auction in February – several were found in 2023.

As it’s the last edition before Christmas, Peter has written his Christmas message with his thoughts on all things detecting. This is our fourth Christmas and our raison d’être is the identification, valuation and sharing of your detecting finds. Many thanks to all of you who send them in.

As it’s Christmas we try to unearth some connection with Christmas and a detecting find. For some Christmas may be a time to reflect on the bible and for others a chance to enjoy a well deserved drink. We’re ticking both boxes as in PAS Finds we have an object with a link to Noah’s Ark and a pub (yes, of course it’s a tenuous link, but it is Christmas; now where’s the sherry?).
