To accompany my new article Henry VI Part Two, a quiz on his coins.

Coins at the time of Henry VI bore no date. The various issues of Henry VI had privy marks that serve to classify them and place them within a date range, as shown below. Here is an example, together with the various privy marks found on Henry VI coins. Additional pellets appear in some issues, next to the king’s head and in the angles of the reverse. There are 6 issues to identify in the quiz below.

Example: Leaf-Mascle

Obverse: leaf below bust, mascle after REX. Reverse: leaves after POSVI and SIE, mascle before LA

For many detectorists one of the joys of detecting is the connection with history that their finds brings. In my review of DNW – Coins and Historical Medals – 9 February, there are the stories of two collectors whose interest in coins was sparked by the connection to history.

Drawing on that, in this quiz there are 8 coins that were minted in the same year as significant events in British history. Match the coin to the event.

The post Quick Quiz #2 Edward I Pennies appeared first on Detecting Finds.

]]>
In 1279, Edward I instituted a major reform of the coinage. As part of this, the moneyer’s name was removed from coins (with the exception of Robert de Hadelie of Bury St Edmunds). The legend on the reverse would bear the name of the mint only, prefixed by CIVITAS or VILLA. For example, in the image below, the legend reads CIVITAS LONDON. The tip for identifying the mint name is to find the word “CIVITAS” or “VILLA” on the coin. The letters that remain are the name of the mint.

In this quiz, you will see the reverse of 8 Edward I pennies from 8 different provincial mints. Identify the mint.
